The Savages
The Claddagh Ring
London
10th September 2006
Screaming Lord Sutch might well be history but Savage’s bassist Tony Dangerfield
keeps the name alive, although this was the band’s first gig for about two years.
Described as "in your face rock ‘n’ roll" it lived up to its name. Kicking off with
‘Lucille’, Dangerfield on bass and vocals, along with Angi Antinori - guitar, Jack
Irving - drums and Dave Dix - saxophone really belted it out in true Savages fashion.
Although the band is clearly lacking a degree of showmanship and theatrics without
its leader, it has to be said that Dangerfield’s vocals are vastly superior to ol’
Dave Sutch’s. Despite a few technical problems with the drum kit the band produced
a great high energy set of hard-hitting rock ‘n’ roll, finishing with the inevitable
‘Johnny B. Goode’. I did have a few words with Tony after the gig and suggested they
start gigging more regularly. I’m sure it wouldn’t take long before they built up
a following once again.
