The Savages
Carlo Little, just out of the army (national service) met Sutch in a coffee bar. Nicky Hopkins lived down the road from Carlo; he knew Bernie Watson, and Bernie Knew Ricky Brown (who was going under the name of Ricky Fenson at the time). The original idea was for Sutch to manage the group.
Carlo: 'With only one amp between us, we started rehearsing in the back room of The Swan in Sudbury - just the four of us. The plan was to be an instrumental quartet - just copying American records... but one day, Bernie managed to get this screeching, wailing sound out of his guitar - and Sutch started leaping around screaming! From then on, he became our singer. He knew all the lyrics to American hits anyway".
When musicians joined his band, Sutch invariably changed their names. Roger Mingay was known as "Scratch and Scrape Bailey", Ken Payne as "Hopping Ken Rupert Payne", Bernie Watson as "Strawberry", Ritchie Blackmore as "Bluebell", Tony Dangerfield as "Tulip". All his pianists were called Freddie Fingers Lee - but Fred Cheeseman kept the name forever.
Tony Dangerfield: 'I joined two days into a long tour... and we didn't get back to London for five weeks. Some magazine did some research and found that we were the hardest working band in Britain: the Savages and Johnny Kidd'.
Joe Meek signed Dangerfield as a solo artist and produced a single, "I've Seen Such Things", on the Pye label. Dangerfield had dyed blonde hair - but Meek made him dye it black as he already had Heinz.
Carlo, Ritchie and Tony gave Sutch about five minutes notice they were leaving him.
Following the demise of the Crusaders, Carlo played in various bands including Billie Davis', Sutch again, The Flowerpot Men and Hurricane. He also did studio work. Tony Dangerfield returned to England from Hamburg and played in numerous bands, including Screaming Lord Sutch and The Savages on and off until the tragic death of Lord David Sutch in 1999 after returning to the gig scene following a serious road accident on August 28th 1998, which laid him off gigs for two years. Although not gigging, Tony didn't lie about moping, he promoted bands and managed the psychobilly band Demented Are Go.
