The John Lennon Story by George Tremlett Futura Books 1967
Another English musician who was there at the same time was Tony Dangerfield, who told me: 'The groups didn't know each other all that well, because we were appearing at different clubs, and we'd just happen to meet at the same bars or down at the Seaman's Mission ...

John used to go round with a big fat chick called Margo, who used to go everywhere with him. He pulled her out of the audience one night - all the English musicians had German chicks. It was like a colony of English yobboes and German chicks. All you had to do was say you were with an English group, and you'd get a chick just like that - and they'd all be hanging around the same bars or down at the Mission, eating their beans and chips, because it was cheap down there ... there was nothing glamorous about it.

Hamburg was a very rough place, and I can remember a doctor was brought down to one club and all the musicians who were appearing there were lined up against a wall, told to face the wall and drop their trousers - and this doctor went straight down the line and injected their arses one after another.

That was how they tried to stop the social diseases spreading through the clubs. Yes, they went through the lot - and it had to be done because a lot of the German chicks the guys were living with were hookers on the Reeperbhan'.
